Dynamics NAV to Business Central Migration

For years, Microsoft Dynamics NAV has helped businesses manage finance, operations, inventory, sales, and other critical processes.

And for many organizations, it still works.

But “still working” and “ready for the future” are two different things.

Microsoft has recently outlined the next steps for customers running Dynamics NAV as part of its broader ERP modernization guidance.

The NAV timeline is changing

The final version of Dynamics NAV was released in 2017, with extended support ending in January 2028.

There is another important date to keep in mind:

April 30, 2031.

After this date, customers running existing NAV on-premises deployments will no longer be able to renew service plans or subscription licenses, or purchase additional perpetual users.

That doesn’t mean you need to migrate tomorrow.

But it does mean waiting until the last minute may not be the best strategy.

So, what’s the alternative?

Microsoft points NAV customers toward Dynamics 365 Business Central as a modern cloud ERP platform for the next stage of their journey.

Business Central brings finance, operations, inventory, sales, service, manufacturing and projects together in one connected platform.

It also provides:

  • AI-powered capabilities and automation
  • Continuous updates
  • Integration with Microsoft 365, Teams and Outlook
  • Power Platform and Azure connectivity
  • Reduced infrastructure and IT management
  • A scalable foundation for future business needs

But ERP migration is more than moving data

One of the biggest mistakes businesses can make is thinking:

“We just need to move our NAV data to Business Central.”

In reality, a migration is an opportunity to look at the bigger picture.

What customizations are still needed?

Which processes should be improved?

What integrations are critical?

Which historical data needs to move?

Are your reports still relevant?

Are users ready for the change?

And perhaps most importantly:

What does the business actually need from its ERP over the next 5–10 years?

Microsoft recommends assessing the current ERP environment—including customizations, integrations, data, reporting, security and business processes—before defining the migration approach.

Don’t wait for the deadline to start the conversation

A well-planned ERP transition takes time.

The earlier you understand your current environment, the more options you have to decide:

What to keep.
What to improve.
What to simplify.
What to change.

Moving from Dynamics NAV to Business Central shouldn’t simply be about replacing an old system.

It’s an opportunity to build a more connected, intelligent and future-ready ERP environment.
